Murs in Concert feat. Educated Consumers and Shodekeh
April 5, 2006 @ The Ottobar, Baltimore, MD
An unassuming emcee walked on stage, covered in a hoodie and proclaimed, “I’m going to rap for you tonight.” Since Murs is better than your favorite rapper, that’s exactly what he did. With a set that lasted just shy of an hour, Murs blessed the crowd with hits from Murs 3:16, Murray’s Revenge, Walk Like A Man, The End of The Beginning, etc. Proving their allegiance, the audience rhymed word for word with him, even covering the Digital Underground verses on an a cappella version of “Risky Bizness.” Murs definitely got his crowd involved, having them chime in on parts of “Bad Man” and “H-U-S-T-L-E.” Other highlights included “Silly Girl” and “Yesterday & Today” off his latest album. Throughout the set, Murs would go jackin’ for beats and rhyme over classic instrumentals from “Ice Cream” to Gold Digger” and even “It Ain’t No Fun,” which was part of his west-cost tribute. Speaking of, Murs gave an endorsement to classic NWA by wearing a sweatshirt that simply read, “Dre & Eazy & Cube & Ren.” Murs even had a segment for the ladies in the audience where he seduced them with his bizarre lip-syncing of Coldplay. It was at this point that he also confessed his long-time crush on female emcee, Jean Grae. The only downfall of the show was that 9th Wonder, who was originally scheduled to perform, was not in the house. That took away some of the authenticity of the performance, but not enough to take the spotlight off of Murs.
